What should I pack for a luxury Misool liveaboard: the short list
A luxury liveaboard removes most of the packing problem. Dive tanks, weights, towels, drinking water and three meals a day are on board. What remains is personal: the things that must fit you, protect your skin, or carry your name. Start from this list and remove items rather than add them.
- One soft duffel or roll-top bag per person. Hard shells rarely stow under phinisi berths.
- Two swimsuits, so one is always dry.
- A long-sleeve rash guard and leggings for sun and stings.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brim hat and polarized sunglasses with a strap.
- Dive certification card, logbook and the policy document for your dive cover.
- Your own mask, dive computer and, if you prefer it, your own regulator.
- Seasickness medication for the first night.
- Cash in IDR for the marine-park card and gratuities, plus a small USD reserve.
- Passport, printed flight tickets to Sorong and a paper copy of the charter confirmation.
Clothing for warm water and deck evenings
Water around Misool runs about 26–30°C, varying by month and site. That is warm for a single dive and cool by the fourth of the day. A thin full-length wetsuit or a shorty is the usual choice. Many guests dive in a rash guard and leggings alone and add the suit only for the afternoon dives. Bring both options if you run cold.
On deck the day is bright, humid and salty. Light linen or quick-dry shirts, two pairs of shorts, a sarong and sandals cover daytime. Shoes stay in the bag; phinisi decks are barefoot or in boat shoes. A packable rain shell is worth its weight for squalls, which arrive fast and pass fast.
Evenings are underestimated. Anchored in a lagoon with no light for miles, the deck is where you eat and sit after dark. One linen shirt or a light dress, long trousers and a thin sweater or shawl are enough. There is no dress code on any yacht we handle. There is also no reason to arrive at dinner in a wet rash guard.
Laundry on a luxury phinisi is usually handled by the crew, so plan for four or five days of clothing rather than ten. Ask the desk whether it is included on your yacht.
Dive and snorkel kit: on board versus bring your own
Do luxury Misool boats provide dive equipment? Yes, for the heavy part. On a dive-focused liveaboard, tanks, weights, dive guides and tenders are part of the fare, and these boats commonly run three to four dives a day. Full rental sets, nitrox fills and specialty dives are included on some yachts and charged on others, so ask with your booking rather than on the pier in Sorong.
What you should bring regardless of what the boat offers:
- Your own mask. Fit is personal, and a leaking mask spoils a current dive at Boo Windows.
- A dive computer you know. Rental computers exist, but you want your own profile history on a site like Magic Mountain, which runs 7–40 m.
- A surface marker buoy and whistle. Currents at Four Kings and Magic Mountain are moderate to strong, and a guide will want every diver carrying a marker.
- A reef hook if you are comfortable with one. The manta cleaning station at Magic Mountain is the one site where it earns its space.
- A spare mask strap, a spare fin strap and a small save-a-dive kit. Do not count on a dive shop once you leave Sorong.
Snorkelers need less: a mask that seals, a snorkel, fins and a rash guard. Daram’s hard-coral gardens at 3–18 m and Nudi Rock at 5–20 m are the sites where snorkelers get the most, and both are calmer than the exposed pinnacles. Camera and dive-computer checklist
Misool is a photographer’s region. The boat will have power for charging, but may not have spare parts. Pack two batteries per camera, every charger and an Indonesian plug adapter, a spare O-ring and silicone grease, memory cards for the full trip, and a dry bag for tender rides. Test the housing in the hotel sink in Sorong the night before departure, not on the first dive. Dive-computer batteries should be fresh; carry a spare. Seasickness planning for the overnight passage
How rough are the seas around Misool? Inside the lagoons, flat. The exposure is the crossing. Sorong to the Misool anchorages is roughly 90–110 nautical miles, about 10–14 hours underway, and almost every itinerary runs it overnight so you wake up among the karst. Sea state on the open stretch depends on wind, tide and month. October to April is the period most consistently reported as calm, which is also the Misool season; see the best time to visit Misool for the monthly picture.
Plan for one rough night rather than hope it away. Take seasickness medication before departure, not after the first wave, and choose a non-drowsy formula if you intend to dive the next morning; ask a pharmacist about the interaction with diving. Request a lower, midship cabin if the yacht lets you choose. Eat lightly, skip alcohol on the crossing, and sleep. Ginger chews and acupressure bands help some guests and cost nothing in weight.
Once inside the reserve, the yacht moves short distances between anchorages, often while you are diving, and guests prone to motion sickness rarely feel it after the first night. Keep the medication accessible for the return passage.
Medical, insurance, vaccinations and permit cash
What travel insurance do I need for Misool? Two things, and they are different. Standard travel insurance covers cancellation, baggage and ordinary medical treatment. Dive cover is a separate policy or rider that pays for recompression treatment and evacuation after a diving injury; most standard policies exclude it. Liveaboard fares list travel and dive insurance under exclusions, and many yachts ask to see dive cover before your first descent. Medical: confirm with the desk that your yacht carries a first-aid kit and oxygen; personal medication is yours to bring, in original packaging, for the full trip plus a few spare days. Add anti-seasickness tablets, an antihistamine, ear-drying drops, antiseptic and waterproof plasters for reef scrapes, and rehydration salts. Visit a travel clinic before you go to update routine vaccinations and to ask whether malaria prophylaxis is advised for your dates and the Papua region.
Permit cash: Raja Ampat requires a marine-park conservation card, most consistently reported at IDR 700,000 (about USD 40) for foreign visitors and valid for 12 months from purchase. Some 2026 sources report a higher figure, so confirm the current tariff with the marine-park authority (BLUD UPTD) before you pay. It is sold at the authority office in Waisai and, by several accounts, at a counter in Sorong harbor; some yachts arrange it for guests. Bring the fee in IDR notes in case your boat does not. Luggage limits on Sorong flights and what to leave at home
Every Misool liveaboard starts in Sorong, reached by domestic flight into Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ). Jakarta to Sorong takes about 6–8 hours with Garuda Indonesia or Batik Air, Makassar about 3 hours 20 minutes, and direct Bali flights are scheduled to resume with Garuda on 25 October 2026 at about 4 hours. Domestic fares carry lower checked-baggage allowances than long-haul tickets, and the allowance varies by airline and fare class. What not to bring:
- Hard-shell suitcases. They do not fit under berths and spend the week in a corridor.
- Heavy wetsuits, hoods and gloves. The water is 26–30°C and gloves are discouraged on the reefs.
- Ordinary sunscreen. Formulas with oxybenzone or octinoxate are widely linked to coral damage; bring a mineral reef-safe sunscreen and rely on the rash guard.
- Drones without checking first. Published reserve rules do not state a visitor-drone policy; ask the desk for current permission.
- More than a few days of clothing, formal shoes, a hair dryer, and your own towels. All of that is either supplied or unused.
The test for every item: would it be missed on a tender at dawn? If not, leave it.

Packing is the small part; the cabin or yacht decides the trip. Shared-cabin departures to Misool are priced per person and typically run USD 350–900 per person per night in 2026, with dives, meals, tanks and guides included and flights, insurance and gratuities excluded.
