Misool luxury cruise routes at a glance
Misool Luxury sells three private cruise routes, all round-trip from Sorong, all on a yacht that is yours alone for the duration. The shortest is seven nights, because the overnight crossing to southern Misool takes 10–14 hours each way and anything shorter spends more time underway than at anchor.
| Route | Nights | Regions | Sailing hours | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Misool Classic | 7 | Southern Misool: Fiabacet, Boo Windows, Magic Mountain, Balbulol, Wayil, Tomolol, Yellu | 10–14 h each way, overnight | Couples, first visits, divers who want Misool only |
| Misool + Dampier Strait | 10 | Misool plus Kri, Arborek, Cape Kri and the manta stations of the strait | Overnight to Misool; the Dampier Strait sits closer to Sorong | Divers who want two distinct reef systems, families with mixed interests |
| Grand Raja Ampat | 12 | Misool, Wayag, Piaynemo and the Dampier Strait | Adds a 20–30 h passage from Misool to Wayag | Guests who will come once and want all of it |
Sailing hours are planning figures at 8–10 knots; current, reef channels and weather add to them. The season is October to April, with the calmest crossings generally reported from November to March.
Misool Classic, 7 nights, day by day
This is the route the desk recommends for a first visit. Every night is spent in southern Misool, where the dive sites, lagoons and viewpoints sit within short tender runs of each other. The captain reorders days around tide and current.
Day 1: Sorong and the overnight crossing
Guests board in Sorong in the afternoon after a morning flight, or after a hotel in Sorong the night before departure. The yacht clears the harbor before dusk and sails 90–110 nautical miles south through the night. Guests wake to the limestone islands of Misool off the bow.
Day 2: Fiabacet and Kalig
Fiabacet is a chain of pinnacles between 8 and 35 meters with sea fans, schooling snapper, sweetlips and pygmy seahorses. Two dives here, then a tender to the white sand at Kalig for the afternoon. Snorkelers work the shallow tops of the same pinnacles.
Day 3: Boo Windows and Nudi Rock
Boo Windows is the pair of limestone arches, dived from 5 to 30 meters and timed to slack tide. Nudi Rock in the afternoon is calmer and shallower, 5 to 20 meters, for nudibranchs, frogfish and ghost pipefish. It works as a relaxed macro dive or a snorkel.
Day 4: Magic Mountain
Magic Mountain is an exposed seamount from 7 to 40 meters and the main manta cleaning station in Misool. Current is moderate to strong and variable, so the dive guides treat it as an advanced site. Sharks and trevally pass the ridge; the strongest manta period is generally December to March.
Day 5: Balbulol and Harfat Jaya
Balbulol is the karst-island cluster in southern Misool. The yacht anchors outside and the tender threads the lagoons. In the afternoon a steep hike with a local guide reaches the Harfat Jaya viewpoint over the islands.
Day 6: Wayil, Tomolol and the jellyfish lake
Wayil, the sheltered turquoise lagoon also called Love Lagoon, is a tender excursion with a viewpoint above it. Tomolol cave holds prehistoric red rock art, viewed from the tender with a guide and never touched. Lenmakana is a saltwater lake of largely stingless jellyfish, snorkeled at the surface only, without fins, scuba or sunscreen.
Day 7: Yellu, Daram and the return
A village visit at Yellu and a last shallow snorkel over the hard-coral gardens and turtles of Daram, 3 to 18 meters. The yacht sails north in the late afternoon for a second overnight crossing. Guests disembark in Sorong on the morning of day 8 for an onward flight.
Misool and the Dampier Strait, 10 nights
Ten nights keep the full Misool program above and add three nights in the Dampier Strait, the channel between Waigeo and Batanta. The strait sits much closer to Sorong than Misool does, so the extra days go to diving rather than passage.
The Dampier days center on Cape Kri, Arborek village and the manta cleaning stations of the strait. Misool is about soft coral, limestone and lagoons; the strait is generally dived for its fish-rich, current-swept reefs.
The usual order is Misool first, then north to the strait, then a short final leg into Sorong, so the long crossing comes at the start and the last morning is a short run. For a per-cabin alternative on the same waters see the Misool and Raja Ampat liveaboard page.
Grand Raja Ampat, 12 nights
Twelve nights add the two northern icons: the limestone cones of Wayag and the viewpoint over Piaynemo. The price of those two names is a long passage. Misool to Wayag is roughly 200–240 nautical miles, 20–30 hours underway at 8–10 knots, and in practice more than one overnight leg.
The desk routes it Sorong, Misool, Wayag, Piaynemo, Dampier Strait, Sorong. Guests who want Wayag in a shorter cruise are told plainly that a seven-night itinerary cannot hold Misool, Wayag and the Dampier Strait together; it would be a cruise of crossings. Twelve nights is the honest minimum for all three.
How many nights to book is the most common question the desk receives. This guide to how many nights Misool needs walks through the trade-offs route by route.
Diving and non-diving versions of the same route
Every route runs in a diving and a non-diving version with the same anchorages. On the diving version the day is built around two to three dives, depending on the yacht, with tanks and weights; nitrox and courses are arranged on request and sit outside the charter rate.
On the non-diving version the same days become snorkeling over Daram and the Fiabacet pinnacle tops, lagoon runs by tender, the Harfat Jaya hike, Tomolol, the jellyfish lake and long afternoons on deck. Magic Mountain is skipped, or reduced to a surface look at the mantas when conditions allow. A couple where one dives and one does not can run both versions on the same day.
The underwater detail for either version sits on the Misool luxury diving page, and the conservation rules that shape every stop are explained in the Misool marine reserve guide.

Smaller yachts suit the Misool Classic, where anchorages are tight and the tender does the work. The larger phinisi and Lasha carry the 10- and 12-night routes well, because the long passages pass more comfortably on a bigger hull. Larger yachts such as Lamima, Prana by Atzaró and Dewi Nusantara also cruise these waters on request and are quoted case by case; the superyacht tier explains how the desk handles them.
Why 3- to 5-night cruises are not sold for Misool
A five-night cruise to Misool spends two of its nights underway and arrives with three days to see a region that rewards seven; three nights is worse. The desk does not sell them, and guests with fewer days are steered to the Dampier Strait, where the sailing is short. The 7-night minimum is a quality floor, not a sales device.
Festive departures: Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year
The festive weeks fall inside the best of the season. December to March is the strongest manta period and January and February are often the calmest months for the crossings, so Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year departures are the first dates to go on every yacht.
A Misool luxury cruise over Christmas usually runs 7 nights, boarding a few days before the 25th and disembarking before New Year, or 10 nights that cover both. The desk holds a yacht against a signed agreement and deposit, not against a conversation. For festive dates, confirm the yacht well before the October season opens.
Chinese New Year falls between late January and mid February and is busy for the same reasons. The best-time guide shows how the holiday weeks line up with the manta and weather windows.
Misool luxury cruise prices, per yacht per night
Private cruises to Misool are priced per yacht, per night, from USD 6,400 to USD 35,000 depending on the vessel, with a 7-night minimum from Sorong. That is the whole yacht, not a per-person fare. Where a yacht lands in the range depends on her size, her capacity and the season.
Worked totals
- Misool Classic, 7 nights on a ten-guest phinisi at the entry rate of USD 6,400: USD 44,800 for the whole yacht, about USD 640 per guest per night.
- Misool + Dampier Strait, 10 nights on Samambaia at USD 7,035: USD 70,350 for the whole yacht, about USD 502 per guest per night with fourteen guests.
- Grand Raja Ampat, 12 nights on Alila Purnama at USD 16,500: USD 198,000 for the whole yacht, USD 1,650 per guest per night with ten guests.
- Misool Classic, 7 nights on Lasha at USD 11,600: USD 81,200 for the whole yacht, about USD 446 per guest per night with twenty-six guests.
Figures are indicative. The final rate is prepared by the desk once the yacht, dates and guest count are fixed, and 11% VAT applies on top of the charter rate.
All inclusive on board, and what sits outside
The charter rate covers the whole yacht, crew, chef, all meals, snorkeling and standard dive equipment, tenders, shore excursions and Sorong airport transfers; dive guides are confirmed per yacht on the quote. Outside it sit flights to Sorong, the Raja Ampat conservation entry card paid per person as a government fee, premium beverages, crew gratuities, nitrox and courses. The Misool luxury cost page breaks the full trip budget down line by line.
How a cruise differs from a liveaboard cabin
A liveaboard sells a cabin on a fixed departure, typically USD 350–900 per person per night in a shared cabin, on a set route with other guests. A private cruise sells the yacht: the route bends to the guests, meals are cooked for them, and the dive day starts when they do. For two couples the cabin is the sensible choice; from nine guests upward the per-person arithmetic on an entry-level private yacht usually closes the gap. The Misool luxury liveaboard page lists the per-person options.
How to book a Misool luxury cruise
Send the desk your dates, guest count, whether anyone dives and the route you lean toward. The reply names two or three yachts open on those dates with the exact per-night rate and a worked total. A hold follows a signed agreement and deposit; the desk then arranges Sorong transfers and the conservation cards and prepares the route with the captain. The full sequence is described on the Misool luxury trip page.
Misool luxury cruise FAQ
How many sailing hours are there from Sorong to Misool?
Sorong to southern Misool is roughly 90–110 nautical miles, about 10–14 hours underway at 8–10 knots. Every route here runs it as an overnight passage, so guests sleep through the crossing and wake at anchor. Exact time depends on the anchorage chosen and on current, weather and reef routing.
How rough is the crossing from Sorong to Misool?
It is open water and conditions vary. Inside the October to April season, and particularly from November to March, crossings are generally reported as calm; January and February are often the smoothest months. The captain adjusts departure time to the forecast and holds in Sorong if conditions call for it.
How deep is Magic Mountain in Misool?
Magic Mountain is an exposed seamount dived from 7 to 40 meters. Currents are moderate to strong and shift with the tide, so the guides schedule it for experienced divers and time it around slack water. It is the main manta cleaning station in Misool, strongest from December to March.
Can a 7-night cruise include Misool, Wayag and the Dampier Strait?
No. Misool to Wayag alone is 200–240 nautical miles and 20–30 hours underway, on top of the overnight crossing from Sorong. Seven nights hold Misool well; ten nights add the Dampier Strait; twelve nights are needed for all three regions with time at anchor in each.
Do Raja Ampat cruises visit Kri, Arborek, Piaynemo and Wayag?
Yes, on the longer routes. Cape Kri and Arborek sit in the Dampier Strait and are part of the 10-night route. Piaynemo and Wayag lie in the north and need the 12-night Grand Raja Ampat route. The 7-night Misool Classic stays in southern Misool by design.
Should I book a Christmas or New Year cruise in Raja Ampat?
If the dates work, yes. The festive weeks sit inside the strongest manta period and close to the calmest crossing months, so conditions tend to be at their best. The constraint is availability; yachts for Christmas and New Year are the first to be held, so confirm early.
