Misool cabin or private charter: how each is priced
A shared cabin on a Misool liveaboard is sold per person per night. The typical 2026 range for a luxury vessel is USD 350 to 900 per person per night, with the most refined boats reaching USD 1,000 to 1,900. Over a seven-night itinerary that works out to roughly USD 3,500 to 8,400 per person before flights and variable extras. Where you sit in that range depends on the cabin deck, the season and whether diving is bundled.
A private charter is sold per yacht, per night. In Raja Ampat the range is USD 6,400 to 35,000 per yacht, per night, depending on the vessel, her capacity and the season, with a 7-night minimum and departures from Sorong. To make that concrete, seven nights on a ten-guest phinisi at the entry rate is USD 44,800 for the whole yacht, about USD 640 per person per night, plus 11% VAT. The Raja Ampat entry permit, flights to Sorong and premium beverages sit outside it.
The two prices describe different purchases. The cabin price buys a bed and a place in the dive rotation on someone else’s schedule. The charter price buys the vessel and the itinerary itself. Comparing them only makes sense once you divide the charter rate by the number of people who will actually sail.
Break-even by group size
The table divides the private entry rate of USD 6,400 per yacht, per night by the guests on board and sets the result against the shared-cabin range. Two vessels from our Misool portfolio are added as real data points. All figures exclude VAT, permits and flights.
| Group | Shared cabin, per person per night | Private charter, per person per night | Usual answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couple (2 guests) | USD 350 to 900 | USD 3,200 at the USD 6,400 entry rate | Cabin, unless privacy is the point of the trip |
| 6 guests | USD 350 to 900; premium cabins USD 1,000 to 1,900 | About USD 1,067 at the entry rate | Close. Against premium cabins the private yacht costs the same or less |
| 8 guests on Kayra | USD 350 to 900 | USD 875 at USD 7,000 per yacht, per night | Charter, at the top of the shared range, with the whole yacht |
| 10 guests | USD 350 to 900 | USD 640 at the entry rate; USD 1,200 on Rascal at USD 12,000 per yacht, per night | Charter on cost at entry level; charter on control at any level |
| 14 guests | USD 350 to 900 | About USD 457 at the entry rate, though 14-guest yachts price above entry | Charter, on a larger vessel higher in the range; plan on a figure nearer the 6 to 10 guest rows |
Read the table as a direction, not a quote. The crossover with premium shared cabins arrives at about six guests; against mid-range cabins, at eight to ten. Beyond ten, the question is no longer whether a charter costs more per person but which yacht in the range fits the group. Our Misool luxury cost guide runs the same arithmetic across every tier.
Flexibility: itinerary, dive pace and dates
A shared departure runs on published dates along a published route. The cruise director sets the dive schedule for the whole manifest, and dive-focused boats commonly run three to four dives a day. If your dates are fixed and your group is small, this is a good way to see Misool. The friction appears when your dates miss a departure, or when half the boat wants a fourth dive and you want a lagoon afternoon.
A private charter removes both. You choose the dates within the October to April season, the route and the pace: Misool alone for seven nights, or Misool paired with the Dampier Strait on a longer charter. The crossing from Sorong is 90 to 110 nautical miles, 10 to 14 hours underway, normally overnight, and on a private yacht you decide which night. The guide to how many nights Misool needs explains why seven is the floor. Guests still deciding on the region can read Misool compared with Komodo and other liveaboard destinations before settling on dates.
Privacy and service ratio
On a shared boat the crew serves everyone aboard, cabins are allocated in booking order and the sundeck belongs to the manifest. On a ten-guest private yacht the same crew serves only your party. Meals are timed to you, the tender waits for you, and nobody else’s camera is in your frame at Boo Windows. For a honeymoon or a family with young children, this usually decides it before the arithmetic does.
What each includes, and the cabin buy-out as a middle path
A shared cabin on a luxury Misool liveaboard typically includes the en-suite cabin, three meals a day, snacks, soft drinks, guided diving or snorkeling, tanks, weights, dive guides, tenders and shore excursions. Higher-priced boats may add transfers, marine-park fees, equipment, nitrox, Wi-Fi and kayaks, but this varies by vessel and should be confirmed in writing. Flights to Sorong, visas, insurance, alcoholic drinks and gratuities are usually excluded; park permits, rental equipment and nitrox sometimes are.
A private charter at our rates includes the whole vessel, the crew, a chef, all meals, snorkel and basic dive equipment and Sorong airport transfers. Outside the rate sit the Raja Ampat entry permit, a government fee charged per person, flights to Sorong, premium alcohol, crew gratuities and any courses or nitrox requested. The permit fees post lists the reported 2026 tariff.
The cabin buy-out
There is a third option. Book every cabin on a scheduled shared departure and the boat is usually yours for that trip at the operator’s per-cabin price. You gain exclusive use of the vessel and crew but keep the published dates and route, and the operator’s terms on deposits and route changes still apply. It only works while every cabin on that departure is still open, which in Misool’s peak months means asking early.
Which yachts offer both
Most vessels in Misool do one or the other. Dive liveaboards sell cabins on fixed dates and sometimes release the whole boat for an open week. Charter yachts are built around a single party and do not sell cabins individually. In our Misool portfolio, Rascal and Kayra fall into the second group: each is chartered whole, per yacht, per night, and the cabins are not sold individually.
For one to four travelers, start with our Misool luxury liveaboard page, where shared-cabin departures are listed per person per night. From six guests, compare the phinisi charters of 35 to 50 meters and the boutique phinisi under 35 meters. For diving-led groups, the Misool luxury diving page sets out how the sites are paced.
Plan it
Send the desk your dates, your group size and whether diving leads the trip or sits beside it. We return a written comparison showing a shared-cabin total per person and a private charter total per yacht for the same week, with VAT, permits and transfers on separate lines. Start with the Misool luxury cost page for the full USD 6,400 to 35,000 per yacht, per night range, then read the booking process to see how a hold, a deposit and a confirmed itinerary follow each other. The two yachts below show where real charter rates land in Misool.
Kayra
38 m phinisi · 4 cabins · 8 guests
From USD 7,000 per yacht, per night (+ 11% VAT), 7-night minimum.
Rascal
30 m traditional phinisi · 5 cabins · 10 guests
From USD 12,000 per yacht, per night (+ 11% VAT), 7-night minimum.
Is it less expensive to book a cabin or charter the whole yacht in Misool?
For one to four travelers, a cabin costs less, at USD 350 to 900 per person per night against USD 3,200 per person for a couple on a USD 6,400 entry-rate charter. From six guests the gap narrows, and at ten guests the entry-rate charter works out to about USD 640 per person per night, inside the shared-cabin range.
How much does a Misool luxury liveaboard cost per person per night?
Plan on USD 350 to 900 per person per night for a luxury shared cabin in 2026, with the most refined vessels reaching USD 1,000 to 1,900. A seven-night trip therefore runs roughly USD 3,500 to 8,400 per person before flights and extras. Peak-season Misool itineraries and suites can exceed this, so confirm the cabin deck and dates before comparing.
What is included in a luxury private charter versus a shared liveaboard?
A private charter includes the whole vessel, crew, chef, all meals, snorkel and basic dive gear and Sorong airport transfers. A shared cabin includes the en-suite cabin, meals, soft drinks, guided diving or snorkeling, tanks, weights, tenders and shore excursions. Both leave the Raja Ampat entry permit, flights to Sorong, premium alcohol and gratuities outside the rate.
What is the minimum number of nights for a private Misool yacht charter?
Seven nights, Sorong to Sorong. The crossing to Misool is 90 to 110 nautical miles and takes 10 to 14 hours each way, normally overnight, so a shorter charter spends too much of its time under way. Seven nights gives about five full days among the lagoons and dive sites. A longer charter can pair Misool with the Dampier Strait.
How many guests can a private Misool yacht accommodate?
The two yachts above carry 8 to 10 guests. Kayra has 4 cabins for 8 guests at USD 7,000 per yacht, per night. Rascal has 5 cabins for 10 guests at USD 12,000 per yacht, per night. Larger superyachts in the Raja Ampat range carry more and price higher, and the desk matches the vessel to the number of cabins your party needs.
Can I buy out all the cabins on a shared Misool departure?
Often, yes, while every cabin on that departure is still unsold. You pay the per-cabin price for all of them and gain exclusive use of the boat and crew, but the published dates and route stay fixed and the operator’s terms still apply. Ask early for peak months, and compare the buy-out total with a true charter before deciding.
Tell the desk your dates and your headcount, and we will send both totals side by side, the cabin option per person and the private yacht per night, so you can choose the Misool trip that fits.
