How far in advance should you book a Misool cruise?
The honest answer depends on two things: which week you want, and which yacht. The Misool season runs October through April. The most reliable sea conditions fall between November and March, and January and February are often the best months for calm crossings, visibility and mantas. Those same weeks draw the most demand, and the few flagship yachts that carry 14 guests in private comfort each have one calendar.
So the rule is layered. For Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and the January to February manta window on a flagship yacht, brief the desk 9 to 12 months ahead. For a mid-size phinisi in November, early December, March or April, 4 to 6 months usually gives you a real choice of three yachts rather than a single option.
Shorter lead times happen. A yacht already positioned in Sorong between charters can sometimes take a 7-night booking at a few weeks’ notice, most often in October or April. We do not promise it, and we do not advise planning a Misool trip around it. Flights into Sorong and the Raja Ampat entry permit need lead time of their own, and the month you choose shapes everything that follows.
Step 1: brief the desk
A booking starts with a short message, not a form. Send the Misool Luxury desk three things: your preferred dates with any flexibility, the number of guests with the ages of any children, and the style of trip you have in mind. Style means diving-led, snorkeling and lagoons, family, honeymoon, or a mixed group where some dive and some do not. Add whether you want Misool only or Misool plus the northern islands. The difference decides the yacht and the price. Sorong to central Misool is roughly 90 to 110 nautical miles, an overnight passage of 10 to 14 hours. Misool to Wayag is a further 200 to 240 nautical miles, 20 to 30 hours underway, which needs more than one overnight and spends more of your seven nights in transit. The desk replies, usually within one working day, with any clarifying questions and a plain view of which weeks are open. If your dates already sit inside the lead times above, you are told so directly, with the nearest alternative weeks.
Step 2: a shortlist of three yachts with a written whole-yacht price
Within a few days you receive a shortlist. It holds three yachts, not thirty, chosen for your group size, style and dates. Each entry states the yacht’s length, cabin count and guest capacity, the nightly rate per yacht, the 7-night total, the per-guest equivalent, and exactly what is included and excluded.
The whole-yacht price is the point of this step. Private Raja Ampat charters are priced per yacht, per night, from USD 6,400 to USD 35,000 depending on the vessel, with a 7-night minimum from Sorong. Seven nights on a ten-guest phinisi at the entry rate is USD 44,800 for the whole yacht, about USD 640 per guest per night, with crew, chef, all meals, basic dive equipment and Sorong transfers included.

If the shortlist does not fit, say so. A second shortlist costs nothing.
Step 3: hold, deposit, balance
Choose a yacht and the desk places a hold with the owner. A hold is a dated option on your week, usually a few days long, during which the yacht is not offered to anyone else while you confirm flights and travel companions. It costs nothing, it is written, and it carries an expiry.
To convert the hold into a booking, you sign the charter agreement and pay the deposit. The deposit percentage and the balance due date are set by each yacht owner and are stated on the proposal before you commit, so nothing arrives later as a surprise. The balance is paid before departure on the date in the agreement, and the desk reminds you ahead of it.
Payment is normally by bank transfer in USD. The Raja Ampat entry permit, flights to Sorong, visas, insurance, premium beverages and gratuities sit outside the charter rate and are itemized separately so you can see them. The permit is a per-person government fee, paid in local currency on the tariff that applies on your date of entry.
After the balance clears you receive the sailing documents: the itinerary draft, crew list, embarkation time in Sorong, packing notes and permit instructions. The itinerary stays a draft until the captain reviews conditions the day before departure.

Cancellation, weather clauses and insurance
Charter agreements in Raja Ampat follow the yacht owner’s terms, and they differ from yacht to yacht. In general, the deposit becomes non-refundable once the hold is converted, and the balance becomes non-refundable at a cut-off before departure that is written in the agreement. The desk reads that clause with you before you sign. We do not accept a deposit on terms you have not seen.
Weather is handled by the captain, not by a refund clause. Misool charters run inside the October to April season, and the roughest months, June to September, sit outside it. If conditions on a given day make an exposed crossing unsafe, the captain changes the order of anchorages or shelters among the lagoons. The charter continues, and the yacht does not leave Sorong into a storm.
What a weather clause does not do is refund nights lost to a storm, a cancelled flight into Sorong, or illness. That is the job of travel insurance. Travel and dive insurance are excluded from every charter and liveaboard rate we quote, and we ask every guest to carry a policy that covers trip cancellation, medical evacuation and, for divers, hyperbaric treatment. Buy the policy when you pay the deposit, not when you pack. Cancellation cover normally has to be in place before the event that triggers it, and the deposit is the first money at risk.
Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year 2027 timelines
The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are among the busiest in Raja Ampat. They sit inside the best sea conditions and coincide with school holidays in Europe, Australia and North America. Chinese New Year, which falls in early February in 2027, adds a third peak inside the January to February manta window.
For Christmas 2026 and New Year 2027, the 9 to 12 month window has passed. If you want those weeks, brief the desk today with flexible dates and an open mind on yacht size. A shortlist is still possible. It will simply be shorter, and it may lean toward mid-size phinisi rather than the flagships.
For Chinese New Year 2027, about four months remain. That sits at the lower end of the lead time for a mid-size phinisi and below it for a flagship yacht. Send the brief now, with a week of flexibility on either side of the holiday if you can.
For Christmas 2027 and New Year 2028, the window is open now and closes around March 2027. Brief the desk before the end of the first quarter of 2027 and you will have a true choice of three yachts, the largest among them.
What changes the final price after the shortlist
The shortlist price is written for your dates, so the base rate does not move once it is on paper. What moves is what you add. Four things change the final total.
- Dates. Moving from a shoulder month into the Christmas, New Year or Chinese New Year weeks moves the rate up on many yachts. Moving the other way, into November or March, does the reverse.
- Route. Misool only keeps the yacht within roughly 90 to 110 nautical miles of Sorong. Adding Wayag adds 200 to 240 nautical miles one way, and the fuel and crew hours for it, which some owners price as a fuel or repositioning supplement.
- Extras. Nitrox, dive courses, premium beverages and guest-requested provisioning sit outside the rate and are priced per item on the proposal.
- Guest count. The rate is per yacht, so a smaller group pays the same whole-yacht figure and the per-guest equivalent rises. Per-person items, the Raja Ampat permit above all, scale with the headcount.
Little else changes. Crew, chef, meals, basic dive equipment and Sorong transfers are inside the rate. Indonesian VAT at 11% is shown as its own line on the proposal rather than folded into the nightly figure, so the yacht rate and the tax read separately. If you have dates in mind, the quickest route is a message to the desk with three lines: the week, the number of guests, and whether the trip is diving-led or lagoon-led. The reply is a shortlist of three yachts with the whole-yacht price written for those dates, the 7-night total and the per-guest equivalent. From there the desk places a hold with the owner and the deposit converts it into a booking. How far in advance should I book a Misool liveaboard cabin?
Shared cabins follow the same seasonal logic as private charters. For Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and the January to February manta window, 9 to 12 months ahead gives the best chance of the cabin category you want. Yes, if you can book early. The sea conditions in late December are among the most reliable of the year and the manta cleaning stations are active. The trade-off is demand: flagship yachts are briefed 9 to 12 months out for those two weeks. If your lead time is shorter, ask for a shortlist anyway and keep a week of flexibility on either side.
Is Chinese New Year a busy time for Raja Ampat charters?
It is. Chinese New Year falls in early February in 2027, inside the January to February window that many guests consider the best of the season. Yachts that would otherwise be open in early February are often held for the holiday week. Treat it like Christmas: brief the desk 9 to 12 months ahead for a flagship yacht, or accept a mid-size phinisi at shorter notice.
What is included in a Raja Ampat yacht charter price?
The per-yacht, per-night rate covers the whole vessel and crew, the chef and all meals, snacks and soft drinks, basic dive and snorkeling equipment, tenders and shore excursions, and transfers between Sorong airport and the yacht. It does not cover flights to Sorong, visas, the Raja Ampat entry permit, travel and dive insurance, premium beverages, nitrox or courses, and gratuities. Every proposal lists both columns.
Is it better value to book a cabin or charter the whole yacht in Misool?
It depends on your headcount. Shared cabins cost about USD 350 to 900 per person per night and suit couples or solo divers. A private phinisi at USD 6,400 per yacht per night works out to about USD 640 per guest per night with ten aboard, and the itinerary, meals and pace are yours alone. From roughly eight guests upward, the whole yacht is the stronger option.
How much should guests tip the crew on a Misool luxury trip?
Gratuities sit outside the charter rate and are at your discretion. The desk sends a written guideline with the sailing documents, scaled to the yacht and the length of the trip, so you are not guessing on the last evening. The usual practice is one envelope handed to the captain for the whole crew, in cash, since there is usually no card facility at sea.
