Fleet tier

Misool Phinisi CharterLuxury 35-50 m Sailing Yachts

A Misool phinisi charter puts your group on a hand-built Indonesian sailing yacht of 35 to 50 meters, with four to nine en-suite cabins, a dive deck and a full crew. Rates run from USD 6,400 per yacht, per night, 7-night minimum from Sorong. It is the tier we shortlist first for 8 to 14 guests.

What makes a phinisi, and why it suits Misool anchorages

A phinisi is a two-masted wooden schooner from the Bugis shipbuilding tradition of South Sulawesi. Hulls are typically ironwood and teak, the decks are teak, and the rig carries gaff sails on both masts. Modern luxury phinisi keep that silhouette and add engines, generators and air-conditioned cabins.

Misool rewards this kind of boat. The southern reef of Raja Ampat is a maze of limestone islands and enclosed lagoons, and the best anchorages sit inside them. A phinisi of 35 to 50 meters is long enough to carry a dive deck, a shaded saloon and a proper galley, yet short enough to tuck into a lagoon that a longer superyacht has to wait outside of.

The second advantage is motion at anchor. A heavy wooden hull and rig sits quietly when the afternoon wind comes through the karst channels. Guests sleep well. The crew can launch tenders from a stable platform at first light, which is when the reef is at its best.

If you want to compare this band with the two neighboring tiers, read the Misool superyacht charter page for vessels above 50 meters and the boutique phinisi page for yachts under 35 meters. This page covers the middle band only.

The 35 to 50 m Misool phinisi fleet compared

Sixteen phinisi in this length band take private charters to Misool through our desk. They range from four cabins for eight guests to nine cabins for eighteen. The table lists the figures we hold for 2026, per yacht, per night, before 11% VAT. Where a public rate would sit under the Raja Ampat floor, we quote on request.

Tiare 36.5 m 6 14 USD 7,900 Value for 12 to 14 guests

Three things the table cannot show. First, crew numbers: they vary by yacht and we state them in the quote, and the difference is felt in how quickly a tender is ready or a wetsuit is rinsed. Second, nitrox and water toys vary by vessel and by season, so we confirm them in writing before you hold dates. Third, the character of the cabins differs: some yachts put the master suite on the main deck with its own terrace, others keep every cabin below for a quieter night.

Larger phinisi such as Lamima, Prana by Atzaro and Amandira are longer than 50 meters and belong to the superyacht tier. Rascal sits under 35 meters and is a boutique choice. Dewi Nusantara is a dedicated dive vessel. We mention them so you can place the sixteen above in context, not because they sit in this band.

Phinisi vs motor yacht in Raja Ampat swell

The crossing from Sorong to Misool is open water. A phinisi carries sail and a long keel, so the roll is slow and the boat settles once underway. A motor yacht is often faster, but the ride in a beam sea is sharper and the fuel burn is higher. For a 7-night route that spends five nights inside Misool, the speed gain buys you little.

Inside the lagoons the comparison tilts further. Teak decks stay cool underfoot. The saloon and the aft deck are open to the air rather than sealed behind glass. A phinisi draws a tender fleet that is sized for reef work, not marina hopping. Motor yachts win on cabin count per meter and on air-conditioned interiors, which matters to some guests in the wet months.

For Misool, a phinisi is the better fit for snorkelers, divers and anyone who wants to spend the day outside. A motor yacht suits a group that will stay indoors between stops. If your plan includes northern Raja Ampat as well, the Misool luxury cruise routes page explains how the two halves are stitched together.

Misool phinisi charter price: a 7-night example for 10 guests

Private Raja Ampat charters are priced per yacht, per night, from USD 6,400 to USD 35,000 depending on the vessel, with a 7-night minimum from Sorong. Phinisi of 35 to 50 meters occupy the lower and middle part of that range. Where you land depends on the yacht, her capacity, and the season.

A worked example makes the number real. Seven nights on a ten-guest phinisi at the entry rate is USD 6,400 multiplied by seven, which is USD 44,800 for the whole yacht. Divide that by ten guests and seven nights and you reach about USD 640 per guest, per night. Add 11% VAT on top of the charter rate.

Take a mid-band yacht for a larger party. Celestia carries fourteen guests at USD 13,500 per yacht, per night. Seven nights is USD 94,500 for the whole vessel, or about USD 964 per guest, per night. Jeeva Samudera at USD 10,000 for twelve guests is USD 70,000 for the week, or about USD 833 per guest, per night.

The rate includes the full vessel, crew, chef, all meals, standard snorkel and dive equipment, and transfers between Sorong airport and the yacht. It excludes the Raja Ampat conservation entry fee, which is a government charge per person, flights to Sorong, premium alcohol, crew gratuities, and courses or nitrox when requested. The Misool luxury cost breakdown lists every line item in one place.

  • Entry phinisi, 10 guests, 7 nights: USD 44,800 per yacht, about USD 640 per guest per night.
  • Mid-band phinisi, 14 guests, 7 nights: USD 94,500 per yacht, about USD 964 per guest per night.
  • Both before 11% VAT, conservation fees and flights.

Sorong to Misool under sail: the overnight passage

Every Misool phinisi charter starts and ends in Sorong. From the yacht’s anchorage off the city, the run to central Misool is about 90 to 110 nautical miles. At a cruising speed of 8 to 10 knots that is 10 to 14 hours underway, which is why nearly every itinerary makes it an overnight passage. You board in the afternoon, dine at anchor, and the captain departs after dark.

Guests wake inside the Misool reef. The first morning is usually a shallow site such as Daram, where hard-coral gardens sit at 3 to 18 meters and turtles are common. The exact distance varies by 10 to 20 nautical miles depending on which lagoon the captain chooses for the first anchorage, so the stated hours are a planning figure, not a promise.

The return leg is the same passage in reverse, timed so you are off the yacht by mid-morning on day eight for a flight out of Sorong. Flights into Sorong run from Jakarta in about 6 to 8 hours, from Makassar in about 3 hours 20 minutes, and from Manado in about 2 hours 20 minutes. Garuda is scheduled to resume a direct Bali to Sorong service on 25 October 2026 at about 4 hours. Our guide on how to get to Misool from Sorong covers each option in detail.

The season matters as much as the route. The most consistent sea conditions and visibility at Misool are reported from October to April, with water at about 26 to 28 degrees Celsius. Outside that window, Misool availability is operator-dependent, and the desk says so plainly before quoting.

Best phinisi for couples, families and divers

Couples

Two couples, or a honeymoon pair with friends, do best on a four or five cabin yacht. Kayra and Majik carry eight guests across four cabins, which keeps the deck uncrowded. El Aleph and Fenides add a fifth cabin without changing the feel. The Misool luxury honeymoon page sets out how we route a yacht for privacy at anchor.

Families

Families with children want a wide aft deck, shallow snorkeling and a chef who will cook for small people. Sanctuary at nine cabins and Celestia at seven are the two we recommend first, because the cabin count lets children sleep near their parents without filling the yacht. Twin or double layouts per cabin are confirmed in writing before you hold dates. Our Misool family yacht charter page lists the lagoons we use for first-time snorkelers.

Divers

Divers should look at Damai 1 and Damai 2, Jeeva Samudera and Aliikai Voyage. Dive deck layout, camera facilities, nitrox and guide arrangements vary by yacht and are confirmed in writing before you hold dates. Misool sites such as Boo Windows at 5 to 30 meters, Magic Mountain at 7 to 40 meters and Fiabacet at 8 to 35 meters sit within a short tender ride of the main anchorages. The Misool luxury diving page maps the sites to each day of the week.

Yachts under 35 meters are not on this page by design. They are a different product, with a different price band, and they live on the boutique phinisi charter page.

How to shortlist three yachts and hold dates

Send us three things: your dates or a window, your guest count including children, and whether diving is the point of the trip or an option. We reply with three yachts that fit, each with a per-yacht, per-night rate, a 7-night total and a per-guest conversion so the numbers compare like for like.

Once you pick one, we place a hold with the operator. A hold is normally a short courtesy window while the deposit is arranged. The deposit secures the yacht and the dates. The balance is due before departure on a schedule the operator sets. We confirm nitrox, toys and any special dietary requests in the same written exchange.

If your group is still deciding between a whole-yacht charter and cabins on a scheduled departure, our note on cabin or private charter at Misool walks through the trade-off. The Misool luxury yacht charter overview frames all three tiers side by side.

Misool phinisi charter FAQ

How much does a Misool phinisi charter cost per night?

Private Raja Ampat charters run from USD 6,400 to USD 35,000 per yacht, per night, and phinisi of 35 to 50 meters sit in the lower and middle part of that range. Seven nights on a ten-guest phinisi at the entry rate is USD 44,800 for the whole yacht, about USD 640 per guest per night, before 11% VAT.

What is included in a private phinisi charter from Sorong?

The whole vessel, crew, chef, all meals, standard snorkel and dive equipment, and transfers between Sorong airport and the yacht. Excluded are the Raja Ampat conservation entry fee, flights to Sorong, premium alcohol, crew gratuities, and nitrox or courses when requested. We state inclusions line by line in every quote.

What are the advantages of a phinisi over a motor yacht in Raja Ampat?

A phinisi rolls slowly on the open crossing and sits quietly at anchor inside the Misool lagoons. Teak decks and open saloons suit a trip spent outside. A motor yacht is faster and more enclosed, which helps a group that prefers to stay indoors, but on a 7-night Misool route the speed gain is small.

Can a private phinisi charter go directly from Sorong to Misool?

Yes. Every charter in this band boards at Sorong and sails directly to Misool on an overnight passage of about 90 to 110 nautical miles, or 10 to 14 hours at 8 to 10 knots. The first full day begins inside the reef. Exact hours vary with the anchorage the captain chooses.

When is the best season to charter a phinisi from Sorong to Misool?

October to April is the period with the most consistent sea conditions and visibility at Misool, with water at about 26 to 28 degrees Celsius. Charters outside that window are operator-dependent, and the desk says so plainly before quoting.

Which phinisi is best for diving at Misool?

Damai 1, Damai 2, Jeeva Samudera and Aliikai Voyage are the four we shortlist first for dive-led groups. Sites such as Boo Windows, Magic Mountain and Fiabacet sit within a tender ride of the main anchorages. Confirm nitrox availability with us before holding dates, as it varies by vessel.

Tell us your dates, guest count and whether diving leads the trip, and we will return three phinisi with per-yacht, per-night rates and a 7-night total. Message the charter desk on WhatsApp or email [email protected].
