Misool dive sites by zone: Boo, Fiabacet, Daram and Wayil
Misool is the southern island of Raja Ampat, an overnight passage of about 90–110 nautical miles from Sorong, or 10–14 hours underway for most yachts. The reefs that matter are strung along its southern and eastern coasts, close enough together that a yacht can anchor in one lagoon and reach several sites by tender. That geography is what makes Misool work as a charter destination rather than a long-haul liveaboard loop. If you are still placing Misool against the Dampier Strait and Wayag on the map, the Misool, Raja Ampat guide covers the whole island group.
For planning we group the sites into four working zones; the grouping is ours, not a chart convention. The Boo zone holds Boo Windows, Kaleidoscope and Yilliet, limestone reefs and channels with dense soft coral. The Fiabacet zone is the pinnacle chain: Fiabacet itself, Tank Rock, Nudi Rock and Whale Rock, with the beach at Kalig as a lunch stop between dives. Magic Mountain, often listed as Shadow Reef, is the exposed seamount and sits apart from both.
The Wayil zone adds Four Kings, Candy Store, Gorgonian Passage, Wayilbatan and the Farondi walls, and it is also where the lagoon excursions begin. Daram is the shallow hard-coral and turtle ground that snorkelers and children use. A 7-night charter normally works through two or three zones, repositioning the yacht over lunch or overnight so no day is spent in transit. Our Yapap, Wayil and Fiabacet guide covers the topside stops that sit between these reefs.
Site-by-site table: depth, current, level and signature species
Depths below are the ranges we use when planning a week. Where a site has no verified published profile we mark it approximate, and conditions vary by season and operator. Current is tide-driven everywhere in Misool, so the same reef can be gentle at slack and demanding an hour later; dive guides time entries accordingly.
| Site | Zone | Depth | Current | Level | Signature life |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boo Windows | Boo | 5–30 m | Moderate to strong | Intermediate; snorkel on the shallow side | Twin arches, soft corals, schooling fish |
| Magic Mountain (Shadow Reef) | Offshore seamount | 7–40 m | Moderate to strong, variable | Advanced | Reef and oceanic manta cleaning station, sharks, trevally |
| Four Kings | Wayil | 5–40 m | Moderate to strong, cross-currents | Advanced | Four pinnacles, fans, dense fish schools, pelagics |
| Fiabacet | Fiabacet | 8–35 m | Moderate, tide-dependent | Intermediate | Sea fans, snapper, sweetlips, pygmy seahorses, wobbegongs |
| Nudi Rock | Fiabacet | 5–20 m | Usually calm | All levels; snorkel-friendly | Nudibranchs, frogfish, ghost pipefish |
| Whale Rock | Fiabacet | approx. 5–30 m | Tide-dependent | Intermediate | Soft corals, schooling fish, passing pelagics |
| Tank Rock | Fiabacet | varies by operator | Tide-dependent | Intermediate | Pinnacle reef, schooling fish |
| Candy Store | Wayil | approx. 5–25 m | Tide-dependent | Intermediate | Dense colored soft corals, reef fish |
| Gorgonian Passage | Wayil | approx. 10–35 m | Moderate to strong | Advanced | Large gorgonian fans along a narrow passage |
| Kaleidoscope | Boo | approx. 5–30 m | Tide-dependent | Intermediate | Soft corals, fans, schooling reef fish |
| Wayilbatan | Wayil | 5–35 m | Builds with the tide | Intermediate | Barrel sponges, schooling trevally |
| Daram | Daram | 3–18 m | Light, protected | All levels; snorkel-friendly | Hard-coral gardens, turtles |
Two points stand out. The sites that define Misool for photographers, Boo Windows, Four Kings, Candy Store and Kaleidoscope, are soft-coral sites that reward wide-angle lenses and good timing on the tide. The sites that define it for experienced divers, Magic Mountain and Gorgonian Passage, are the ones with the most current and the most pelagic traffic. A good week includes both, and a private yacht lets the guide choose the order by the tide tables rather than by a fixed schedule.
Boo Windows in focus
Boo Windows is the site most guests ask for by name. Two limestone arches cut through the reef near the surface as swim-throughs, soft corals grow thick on their walls, and when the sun is high the light falls through the openings in shafts that frame many of the photographs taken in Misool.
The profile runs 5–30 m. Guides usually save the arches for the end of the dive when the light is best. Current is moderate to strong and the site is at its calmest around slack water, so the dive guide chooses the window of the day rather than a fixed hour. It is a dive to do twice in a week if the schedule allows.
The shallow side can also be snorkeled. Non-divers in the party can swim the arches from the surface while the divers are below, which makes Boo Windows the natural site for a mixed group. Our Misool snorkeling guide lists the other reefs that work this way.
Which 7-night Misool itineraries dive which sites
Every charter we place in Misool runs a minimum of 7 nights, and a dive-led day runs three or four dives. The difference between itineraries is the balance of zones. A Fiabacet-weighted week leans on the pinnacle chain, Boo Windows and Nudi Rock, and suits groups that want reliable soft coral and macro without strong current. A Wayil-weighted week adds Four Kings, Candy Store and Gorgonian Passage, and suits experienced divers who want more pelagic action.
Magic Mountain features in both, weather permitting, because it is the manta site. The cleaning-station activity is strongest from December to March, so a January or February charter will usually schedule it twice. Our Misool manta season guide explains how the timing works. A combined Misool and Raja Ampat liveaboard route of 10 or more nights adds the Dampier Strait on the way north, at the cost of fewer Misool days.
For families and mixed groups, the snorkel-friendly sites are Daram, Nudi Rock and the shallow side of Boo Windows, with Yapap and the Wayil lagoons as non-diving days. A private charter lets the dive guide shape the week around the people on board. On a shared-cabin liveaboard the route is largely fixed, which is the trade-off we explain in cabin or private charter in Misool.
Season and conditions for Misool diving
Misool is dived from October to April. The south-east monsoon runs May to September, with the roughest seas usually June to September, and the exposed crossings south of the island become difficult or unsafe. The most reliable window is November to March, and January and February combine the calmest seas with peak manta activity. October and April are transitional months, usable but with less margin.
Inside the season, water temperature sits at about 26–30 °C depending on the month, and a thin wetsuit or rash guard covers most divers. Visibility is typically 20–30 m, frequently 25–35 m in the better months, and falls toward 10–15 m during the monsoon. The constraint on any given day is tide rather than weather: the pinnacles and passages run strongest on the big spring tides, and a guide who reads the tables well is worth more than any piece of equipment on board. Our best time to visit Misool guide breaks the calendar down by month.
Rules inside the Misool Marine Reserve no-take zone
These sites lie in and around the Misool Marine Reserve, which covers about 1,200 km² and contains two no-take zones plus a restricted-gear corridor. Inside the no-take zones fishing of any kind is prohibited, including catch-and-release and spearfishing, and so is collecting marine life, damaging coral or anchoring on reefs. Yachts use designated mooring buoys where they exist, and jet skis and other motorized water toys are not permitted under the broader Misool protected-area rules.
Enforcement is continuous, by the Misool Ranger Patrol, a local unit of about 18 rangers working from three stations with five patrol boats, backed by Indonesia’s Marine Police. Visitors pay the Raja Ampat entry fee and the yacht carries the required permits; the Misool and Raja Ampat permit fees guide lists current figures. Drone rules are not clearly published, so ask before flying one. The full background is in our Misool Marine Reserve article.
Plan it
Choose the month first, then the yacht. January or February gives calm crossings and the strongest Magic Mountain manta activity; November, December and March are close behind. Tell us how many divers and non-divers are in the party and which sites matter most, and we will place a yacht with a proper dive deck and a guide who knows the Misool tide tables. Private charters in Raja Ampat start at USD 6,400 per yacht, per night, with a 7-night minimum. The Misool luxury diving page sets out what a dive-focused week looks like, including the sites each itinerary covers and how the daily rhythm runs on board.
Damai 2
Traditional phinisi, 43 m, 7 cabins, 12 guests. Built for diving, with a dedicated dive deck and camera room. From USD 6,850 per yacht, per night (+ 11% VAT), 7-night minimum. See Misool phinisi charter.
What are the best dive sites in Misool?
The ten we build a week around are Magic Mountain, Boo Windows, Four Kings, Candy Store, Fiabacet, Nudi Rock, Whale Rock, Tank Rock, Gorgonian Passage and Kaleidoscope. Boo Windows and Magic Mountain are the two most guests ask for. Which is best depends on the diver: soft-coral sites for photographers, current sites for pelagic action, Nudi Rock and Daram for macro and snorkeling.
What makes Boo Windows famous?
Two limestone arches at the surface that divers and snorkelers can swim through, with soft corals on the walls and shafts of sunlight falling through the openings. The profile is 5–30 m, so it suits most certified divers at slack tide, and the shallow side works for snorkelers. It is among the most photographed sites in Misool and the one most often requested twice in a week.
How deep is Magic Mountain, and is it suitable for advanced divers?
Magic Mountain, often listed as Shadow Reef, runs from about 7 m to 40 m. It is an exposed seamount with moderate to strong, variable current and a manta cleaning station visited by both reef and oceanic mantas, with sharks and trevally passing through. It is generally an advanced dive, and guides time it for favorable tide. Non-divers can sometimes see mantas from the tender.
Which Misool sites are best for soft corals and photographers?
Boo Windows, Four Kings, Candy Store and Kaleidoscope carry the densest soft-coral cover and reward wide-angle lenses, especially when the tide is running and the polyps are open. Fiabacet and Gorgonian Passage add large sea fans. For macro, Nudi Rock is the reliable site. Our Misool underwater photography guide covers settings and timing.
Which Misool dive sites have the strongest currents?
Magic Mountain, Four Kings and Gorgonian Passage. All three are exposed to tidal flow, and Four Kings adds cross-currents between its pinnacles. They are advanced dives timed for slack or favorable tide. Boo Windows and Fiabacet are moderate and tide-dependent, while Nudi Rock and Daram are usually calm enough for relaxed diving and snorkeling.
Which Misool itinerary includes Boo Windows?
Nearly every 7-night Misool charter we place includes Boo Windows, weather permitting, usually on a Fiabacet-zone day, because it is the signature site and sits close to the main anchorages. Wayil-weighted weeks also dive it before moving west. On a combined Misool and Raja Ampat route of 10 or more nights it is normally scheduled in the first Misool days, before the passage north.
